Egypt
has two main diving resorts, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, both
of which are approximately 5 hours flight from the UK. Sharm is
at the tip of the Sinai Peninsular which is the land area joining
Africa to the Middle East. Hurghada is on the opposite shore of
the Red Sea, in mainland of Egypt. Both locations offer diving
in the Northern and Middle areas of the Red Sea, however I will
go into more detail on Sharm El Sheik since it is undoubtedly
the diving Mecca for Europeans. It beats Hurghada on proximity
to good dive sites, and the resort itself is far superior to the
more local and basic town of Hurghada. The only tie between the
two resorts are the great hotel complexes available to stay at!
Sharm
El Sheikh
Sharm
El Sheikh is a predominantly European dive resort and the main
tourist area of Na’ama bay by far eclipses the original
old town of Sharm El Sheik. There are 3 jettys available for both
day boats and liveaboards – the local Na’ama bay,
the larger and more hectic Travco Marina (next to the recompression
facilities) and finally Shark Bay further up the coast.
If you stay in a hotel, The Sharm Hilton Dreams
is fantastic, and the Hilton Fayrouz, and The Camel Hotel are
also recommended. The Camel Bar has to be the place to go at night
to knock back a bottle of Sakara Gold or two! Top quality liveaboards
are Royal Diving III, Dream III and VIP One.
When
to Go
Seasons
in Egypt are the same as the Northern Hemisphere and winter is
from November to March.
The daytime temperature during this time is still very
warm and pleasant, however in the evenings it can drop to 15 degrees.
Summer months of July and August for many are unbearably hot,
although humidity is low. The preferred time of year for most
people to visit is from March to June and September to November.
It barely ever rains in Egypt so there is no rainy season to worry
about.
