Straits
of Tiran
Two
hours by boat from Na’ama bay, 4 reefs named after 19th centuary
British Cartographers are situated in the Straits of Tiran and are listed order
from North to South:-
-
Jackson –
this is the prettiest and most exciting of the 4 reefs and also the probably
largest. At the northern end is the near destroyed wreck of the Lara, however
surf in that area usually prevents the wreck area being explored. The reef
is a steep coral wall with numerous buttresses and caves to investigate.
Sightings are often similar to Shark Reef, with large pelagics common and
it is not unusual to be honoured with the presence of a turtle to two! In
August the lucky may spot groups of hammerheads.
-
Woodhouse –
this is a long oval shaped reef and has quite a few mooring points. This
is the least spectacular of all 4, yet still very pleasant to dive. On the
northern side, the wreck of the Xanadu lies, however at 40m is too deep
to be explored
-
Thomas –
the smallest of the 4 but one of the most popular, the full circumference
of this reef can be covered on one dive, currents permitting.
-
Gordon
– the second largest of the 4, a wreck of the Lovilla is still in breaking
up and falling into the sea. This reef is different in topography with a
plateau dropping off steeply at approximately 30m (this varies around the
circumference). This site is often a good place to spot sharks so it is
worthwhile to keep looking into the blue.
Because
of narrow but deep paths between the reefs, the currents can be very strong
and whip divers round the reefs. Also counter-currents are often found around
the edges of each reef.
